AR-16 RELAY INTERFACE

AR-16 DESCRIPTION

The AR-16 relay interface provides software control of external relays for a wide variety of control system applications. The AR-16 has many uses in the energy management field and allows a conventional PC to be used as a load programmer, temperature controller, demand limit controller and in a variety of other applications such as home automation. Control of the relays are accomplished by transmitting a single byte code from the RS-232 port to energize or de-energize the relay. The AR-16 is expandable to provide up to 128 relay outputs (in 16 channel increments) using EX-16 relay expansion cards. The AR-16 is an output device providing control of relays only. When an application requires input of information as well as relay control, the ADC-16 or STA-16 may be used with the EX-16 Expansion Card for relay control and input functions. The ADC-16 Analog to Digital Converter will provide input interfacing for input of temperature, energy usage, pressures, air flow, etc. The STA-16 Digital Input Card will provide input interfacing for touch tone signals, keypads, and equipment status. Up to (8) AR-16 Relay Interfaces may be connected to a single twisted pair line with the RS-485 option. The PS-4 Port Selector may be used to control remote AR-16 interface cards up to 4,000 feet from the PC. Connection of a modem will allow the AR-16 relay functions to be controlled from a remote site via telephone line.

CONTROL SOFTWARE
AR-8, AR-8X, AR-16 Relay Interfaces and the EX-16, EX-32 Relay Expansion Cards

Relays are energized or de-energized by transmitting a single byte code from the computer RS-232. Even codes de-energize relays. Odd codes energize relays. The relay will latch in the requested state until the discrete relay control code (energize or de-energize) is received or until power to the AR-16 is removed. The relay codes are in sequence up to code 255 (relay #1 codes = 0 & 1 relay #2 codes = 2 & 3 relay #3 codes = 4 & 5 etc.)

GW Basic/QuickBasic Programming Example

To output a command to a specific relay, use the following command:
PRINT #1,CHR$(X); ' (where X = relay code)

EXAMPLES:
PRINT #1,CHR$(1); ' (energize relay #1)
PRINT #1,CHR$(6); ' (de-energize relay #4)
The following two formulas are used to control relays up to relay #128.
The command PRINT #1, CHR$(255); will energize relay #128.
EXAMPLE: 255 = (128 times 2) - 1. Use these formulas in your software to compute relay code as a function of relay number and status.
RELAY CODE = (RELAY # times 2) - 1 ...to energize relay
RELAY CODE = (RELAY # times 2) - 2 ...to de-energize relay
SAMPLE PROGRAM

This program will allow keyboard input of the relay code to control the relay (GW Basic or QuickBasic for IBMs and compatibles).
10 OPEN "COM1:9600,N,8,1,DS,CS" AS #1 '...configure serial port
20 INPUT X '...input relay code
30 PRINT #1,CHR$(X); '...output to AR-8, AR-8X, AR-16 or EX-16
40 GOTO 20
More detailed information is provided with the documentation supplied with the AR-8, AR-8X or AR-16. Programming examples are provided on disk in GW Basic, QuickBasic, Microsoft Visual Basic, Turbo C, Microsoft Visual C and Assembly. Test files also provided (.EXE)

OPTIONS

Options for the AR-16 may be ordered by adding the proper suffix. The following options may be ordered for the AR-16 Relay Interface:

/A Option: The AR-16 serial input is configured for the RS-422 interface.

/C Option: Opto isolators are installed on the AR-16, EX-16 or EX-32 to electrically isolate relay output signals. This option includes the installation of (16) 6 pin sockets (16) limiting resistors, (16) diodes and (16) opto isolators. Opto Isolators are recommended if the relays are located more than 3 feet from the AR-16 or if the AR-16 is connected to equipment other than the relay cards described on the enclosed data sheet (to prevent possible damage or malfunction of the AR-16 or connected equipment).

/Z Option: This option is for use with customized hardware. A 6 digit code will follow the Z suffix to identify the customer and type of modification.

PLEASE NOTE: The AR-16 requires a power supply, connecter cable and relay card(s) to function. Select the power supply and relay card(s) for your application and the proper cable for connection to your computer. The EX-16 expansion card requires the RC-20 ribbon connecter (sold separately) for connection to the AR-16.

To order the standard AR-16 relay interface, specify part number AR-16. The standard AR-16 will be supplied with an RS-232 serial interface.

To order any of the above options, add the proper suffix to the AR-16 part number. Any number of options may be included by adding the proper suffix to the AR-16 part number.

EXAMPLE: use AR-16/C ... to order the AR-16 with opto isolators installed.
use AR-16/A/C ... to order RS-422 and opto isolators.

OP-16-K OPTO ISOLATOR KIT...The OP-16-K kit is for upgrading the AR-16 or EX-16 to provide optically isolated relay outputs. The opto isolators are recommended when the relay cards are located more than 3 feet from the AR-16 or EX-16 cards or when the relay ports are connected directly to other equipment. An isolated power supply must be used to power the relay cards or other devices which are connected to the relay output ports. Each kit provides (16) opto isolators (common collector), (16) 6 pin sockets, (16) resistors and (16) diodes. The AR-16 or EX-16 may be ordered with the opto isolator kit installed by adding the suffix /C (see options) or the AR-16/EX-16 may be shipped back to us for installation of the kit at no charge. Opto Isolators with buffered outputs and/or common emitter outputs are also available. Contact technical support for more information.

AR-8 & AR-8X DESCRIPTION

The AR-8 and AR-8X relay interfaces provide software control of 8 reed relays which are provided on the card. Control of the relays are accomplished by transmitting a single byte code (0 thru 15 binary) from the RS-232 port to energize or de-energize the relay (see AR-16 software example). The AR-8 is not expandable. The AR-8X may be expanded to provide up to 120 relay outputs (in 16 or 32 channel increments) using EX-16 or EX-32 relay expansion cards. The AR-8X also has an input expansion port which allows digital or analog inputs to be added using the ST-16, ST-32, AD-16, or AD-32 expansion cards. These cards will allow input of information along with relay control. The EX-16 or EX-32 Expansion Cards may be used to add additional relay outputs. The AD-16 or AD-32 Analog Expansion Cards will provide input interfacing for input of temperature, energy usage, pressures, air flow, touch tone signals, etc. The ST-16 or ST-32 Digital Expansion Cards will provide input interfacing for on/off equipment status, keypads and other types of digital signals. Up to (16) AR-8 Relay Interfaces may be connected to a single twisted pair line with the RS-485 option. The PS-4 Port Selector may be used to control remote AR-8 interface cards up to 4,000 feet from the PC.
